The Lonely Onlies

April in my gardens is looking pretty lonely.  A few tufts of green here and there, a couple of chives thinking about growing, and some creeping thyme turning green.

Not much happening here at all this year, April Fool's is not a pretty sight

Solitary crocus popping their heads up for the sun

Compared to the gorgeous flowers photos from much of the garden blogging world, the four tiny flowers growing in the garden are really quite pathetic. But, they're a sign to me that spring is indeed coming, and I just need to be patient.

Even the cats are waiting for plants to grow so they can eat their catnip

Underground it's another story.  Ants are venturing out of their winter nests, worms are starting to wiggle their way to the warmer top soils, and microscopic insects are munching on decomposing plant debris.  So, while it's lonely at the top, the minions down below are working on creating beautiful gardens for the coming year.  Working their magic one day at a time.

  1. If your four flowers are "pathetic", I very much wonder what my snow riddled garden is...not one bloom. "Dreary", perhaps? Here's hoping the next couple of weeks brings at least one bloom to my place.

  2. Christine,

If it makes you feel any better, the gardens were under 1 - 2 feet of snow just the week before. And I'm sure they will be covered again soon! It's a long time till snow season ends here.

  4. Kathy, I think I'm having the opposite reaction to my garden than you are to yours. I don't have much in the way of blooms yet, but there's so much green. Normally, I would still have snow in the garden at this time of year; but this year, the snow was all gone by the end of March and the first few days of April have featured temperatures in the 70s! So I've been getting out to do spring clean up and discovering all kinds of new green growth under the fallen leaves and spent flower heads and foliage left in place last fall. -Jean

  5. A crocus is NEVER pathetic! It's pure magic to me. I act like a kid when they poke up out in the spring. Love your lavender one. Spring is coming soon to our mountains!
